AreoShot Coffee Inhalers

AreoShot, a new coffee inhaler, is now on the market in New York and Massachussets.  Its also available in France and online.

The inhaler comes in a cannister about the size of a lipstick tube.  It contains 100 mg of caffeine powder and costs $2.99.  The airborne energy particles coat the inside of your mouth and back of the throat, then are swallowed, Massachusetts General Hospital reports. The particles dissolve quickly and are reportedly too large to reach the lungs.

It was created by David Edwards who is a biomedical engineering professor.  Mr. Edwards claims the product is safe, but US Senator Charles Schumer of New York is calling for a FDA review of the now-unregulated energy product. Edwards, however, dismisses fears that inhaling caffeine might be harmful as “a bit of hysteria” and “the knee-jerk reaction” to anything new, according to USA Today.

Critics fear that it will be used as a drug by partiers.  “You want those 10 cups of coffee, it will probably take you a couple hours to get through all that coffee with all that volume that you are drinking,” Lisa Ganijhu, MD, an internist at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, told ABC News. “With these inhaled caffeine canisters you can get that in 10 of those little canisters — so you just puff away and you could be getting all of that within the hour.”

The packaging warns people not to consume more than three AreoShots a day, well within the safe range for caffeine consumption. According to Massachusetts General Hospital, you’d have to consume about 80 inhalers (8,000 mg. of caffeine) to risk death by caffeine, since such a massive amount could cause a dangerous heartbeat abnormality called ventricular fibrillation.  Three cups of coffee or three AeroShots deliver about 300 mg. of caffeine, considered a moderate, safe intake. Amounts above 750 to 1,000 mg. a day can be risky, due to the potential for “caffeine intoxication,” marked by such symptoms as anxiety, facial flushing, rapid or irregular heartbeat, impaired judgment, GI upset and insomnia.

Coffee Helps You Become and Stay Fit

You have heard it for years. Personal trainers practice it diligently and so do bodybuilders. It helps your workout making you more effective. What is this miracle substance? Coffee. Plain and simple, coffee has remained a sort of “supplement” of choice among fitness buffs to become fit and maintain fitness.

Coffee is very effective when consumed just before a workout according to research by Dr. Robert Motl of the University of Illinois. It helps to block muscle fatigue symptoms, alowing you to do more and push yourself that extra mile.   Its important to remember to also consume enough water during your workout and the rest of your day to counter the fact that coffee is a diuretic.

Roast Your Own Coffee At Home: Roaster Review

For those who are a fan of coffee, its always interesting to look into the roasting process.  From the green bean right to your cup, its all very interesting.   I have now found a new hobby, roasting my own beans at home.

There are a number of coffee roasters available for home use.  Some are affordable and some are on the very expensive side.  I tried out the more affordable FreshRoast + eight home coffee roaster which runs a little over $100.  I found it to be a good product and I got 5 pounds of green beans  for free to boot! 

This particular roaster is perfect for a small household of one or two people.  It looks very nice sitting on my kitchen counter as well.  Always a plus!  It only takes 7 minutes to roast 3.5lbs of green coffee beans.  It has timer and a chaff collector.  It is fairly quiet and does not smoke up the house.  The smell of the roasting beans is amazing.

Kona is King at Hawaii’s First Cupping Contest

Onouli Farm of Kona won top honors at Hawaii’s first coffee-cupping competition this weekend at the Hawaii Coffee Association’s 14th annual conference at Maui Tropical Plantation.  There were 69 entries who were judged by 3 judges.  The scores were based on wet and dry aromas, acidity, body, balance, sweetness and aftertaste.

In other cupping news, Rusty’s Hawaiian, a coffee company in Kau, earned the top score in a cupping of Bourbon varietal coffees by “Coffee Review: The World’s Leading Coffee Buying Guide.”

Save Money: Make Coffee at Home

You can save around $100 per month simply by making coffee at home.  Many of us hit the road in the morning and go straight to the local coffee shop drive-through.  Spending between $2.50 and $5 each morning can really add up over the course of a week.  All of this adds up to one expensive habit.

Yahoo.com reported that “making your coffee at home will run about $0.12-0.28 per cu — small beans compared to store-bought. Assuming the higher end of that estimate calculates to just $1.40 per week or $5.60 each month. For that sweet price, you can afford to take a refill to the office in a reusable travel mug ($11.20 per month) for a later pick-me-up”.

As for me, I enjoy the variety and quality of coffee  that I find from www.honeybean.com ,  however, there are many of shops where you can get great gourmet coffee whether you want to order it online and have it delivered to your door like me, or go to the store itself and pick it out.  You get great coffee and a great value.  Even in these tough economic times, you don’t have to sacrifice your coffee to balance your budget, just modify your routine.

Mocha Mondays at McDonalds

McDonald’s is giving another push in their quest to become number one in the coffee world.  Starbucks started giving away ice cream.  How will McDonald’s counter this freebie?  Two words, “Mocha Monday”. 

July 13 through August 3rd, participating McDonald’s will be giving away 7oz iced and hot Mochas on Mondays.   Admittedly, the free Mochas are smaller than the regular 12oz size that the Mocha’s usually come in.

McDonald’s is estimating that they will give away around 10 million Mochas during this campaign.  Neil Golden, chief marketing officer of McDonald’s USA said, “This is one of the largest sampling initiatives we’ve taken on as a company.”

Viagra Laced Coffee Confinscated in Malaysia

Newkerala.com has reported that more than 900 boxes of coffee, laced with the impotence drug Viagra, were confiscated in Malaysia. The product was being marketed to consumers as an energy booster.

“The coffee mixture had been distributed in sachets nationwide,” said a report in the New Straits Times Online. “Investigations revealed the distributor attempted to mislead the public by claiming the coffee mixture could provide an energy boost, besides being beneficial for men.”

Viagra, now widely used to treat men for impotence, was initially developed to treat high blood pressure and certain symptoms of heart disease. However, drug trials revealed that it also could be used to treat sexual problems in men.

Coffee Cures Cellulite

Women have fought to get rid of cellulite for years.  Now it seems that there is a way to rid yourself of the unsightly stuff.  Coffee!!!.  That’s right, plain, caffeinated coffee.

Putting coffee on your skin seems to reduce cellulite, or at the very least, the appearance of it.  Cosmetic companies have caught on to this and are now using coffee and/or caffiene in some of their anti-cellulite creams.  Look for it on the label.  Of course, you can also use coffee grounds to get the same effect, but it is much more messy than the creams, which can be expensive. 

If you choose to use coffee grounds, its important to do so at least 3 times a week to acheive and maintain the desired results.  To do the treatment with coffee grounds, apply warm coffee grounds all over your body and massage it in. Then you wrap yourself in plastic wrap for twenty minutes. 

So how does this work? 

The caffeine in coffee is the secret.  Caffeine helps widen the blood vessel of the body and stimulates the fat cells, breaking them down. Warning though, if you drink huge amounts of coffee daily, your cellulite could look worse. It seems that caffeine when ingested promotes more cellulite formation.  Topical application of caffeine does not have this effect.

The rule of thumb when it comes to cellulite?  Slather the coffee on and keep it comming for cellulite free thighs.

Does Coffee Dehydrate You?

People who live in higher elevations, such as in Boulder, CO., often worry about dehydration.  They feel that due to the dry climate and huge amount of outdoor activities, they must drink water from the time they get up until they lay their head on the pillow at night to stay hydrated.  It also makes many wonder if coffee is a dehydrating drink.  Some health professionals tell their clients to drink two glasses of water for every cup of coffee they drink in order to avoid dehydration.  However, recent research is countering this assumption. 

Vanderbilt University Institute for Coffee Studies and Positively Coffee have been doing research on the dehydrating effects of coffee.  Their studies show that moderate caffeine consumption does not dehydrate people, but it is considered an acceptable contributor to a humans daily fluid intake requirement.  A 2007 study looked at fluid balance, hydration and exercise in the heat.  They concluded that if you have no more than 400mg of caffeine, there is no dehydration effect with either exercise or at rest.  A 1.5 ounce sot of espresso contains approximately 77 mg of caffeine so a single or even a double latte in the morning will not hurt you.  Many people even say that consuming coffee before they exercise makes them more productive during their activity.
