High Beam Coffee – Ethiopian Harrar (Blue Beam) – Coffee Review
Coffee Provided by High Beam Coffee, www.highbeamcoffee.com
Like most African coffees there is a slight tartness or wineyness, this is hidden almost completely in this dark roast by an intense smokiness. You can still taste floral and fruity notes as the coffee sets on your palette. There is a noticeable lack of any sharp bitterness which some darker roasts can have. Overall a great cup of coffee, especially if you like deep flavored coffee and can enjoy the smokiness that comes along with that.
Notes from High Bean Coffee
From the region of Harrar, Ethiopia, we bring you the Longberry coffee bean. Fair Trade, Organic, and delicious. We roast it to perfection (Full City) to bring out the light-bodied flavor, and natural blueberry notes. At the tip of the tongue you will notice the bright fruity notes. Onward through the palette weaves a classic light and smokey body with a finish that lingers long enough for you to cherish but calls on you for another taste. It is undoubtedly the founders’ choice for a single bean flavor in a cup.
With that we proudly introduce to you, Blue Beam
Armeno Coffee Roaster – Papua New Guinea Estate – Coffee Review
Coffee Provided by Armeno Coffee Roasters, www.armeno.com
More floral than most roasts of Papua New Guinea the sharp acidic bite usually found was still there but muted by a smoky finish. This coffee has a smooth mouth feel and makes a great after dinner treat.
Notes from Armeno Coffee Roaster
The Papua New Guinea coffee is full-bodied without the earthiness of some Indonesian coffees. The bean is blue-green in hue and of very uniform size. At Armeno, we roast Papua New Guinea to a medium full city which is a light chestnut brown color and lighter than we roast other Indonesian coffees because the coffee is so clean and well balanced.
Doi Chaang Coffee Review – Single-Estate Piko’s Peaberry
Coffee Provided by doichaangcoffee.com
A surprisingly delicate medium roasted peaberry coffee. At first taste you get a flush of fruitiness quickly followed by a sweet nuttiness. As the cup goes your palate becomes aware of the hint of full-bodied flavor that many people seek in a dark roast coffee without the added bitterness.
Overall a great cup of coffee, I’d suggest avoiding any super sweet foods with this one. There are too many subtle flavors and aromas that would get covered up by anything sugary. I enjoyed this cup all on its own.
Notes from Doi Chaang -
The Doi Chaang Coffee Company is a unique partnership between the Akha hillside tribe of Doi Chaang Village, located in the Chiang Rai Province of Northern Thailand, and a small Canadian group of coffee enthusiasts. The Thai farming family co-operative cultivate and process 100% Arabica, organic, single-origin coffee beans while the Canadian experts roast, market and distribute the coffee.
The literal translation of “Doi Chaang” is Elephant Mountain which describes the imposing shape of the hills rising behind Doi Chaang Village.
In honour of Piko, our founder and the visionary who foresaw a better future for the Akha people, we proudly include his likeness on every bag of Doi Chaang Coffee
Lacas Kenya AA Coffee Review

Like all Kenya AA, and most African coffees this coffee had a nice sharp acidic punch. This Kenya AA was at the same time smooth to the palate and very aromatic. A lot of African coffees are acidic and winey but most roasts have a tough time balancing the finish, which I found this coffee did well.
Overall this was a very pleasant cup of coffee. If you’ve never tried an African coffee, or a sharply acidic and winey coffee then I would definetly suggest starting with a fresh cup of Kenya AA.
Back Pedal Brew by Middle Fork Roasters
Back Pedal Brew by Middle Fork Roasters (Coffee Review)
Origin: Blend
This is a Medium Dark Blend of organic coffees. At first blush, there is an intense smokiness that lingers on the palate, producing a subtle bitterness. As the cup cools slightly, the finish rounds out, but the intensity of flavor remains in every sip.
I’d stay away from the cream and sugar on this one, either one will cover the flavor profile the roaster intended. Intense yet smooth.
The flavor is intense enough to hold up a super sticky dessert, but smooth enough to drink before the worst of business meetings.

Santa Caws by Ravens Brew (Coffee Review)
This year’s Santa Caws is a completely new and inspired blend designed specially for the season. Sensations of sweet dark red berries, milk chocolate and toasted nuts. A superb balance of crisp acidity and velvety mouthfeel. Santa Caws is a rich balanced cup that pairs well with holiday deserts and frosty winter mornings. Guaranteed to bring people together in good cheer, as well as good taste! Full City Roast. |

Origin: Blend
This coffee is a Full City Roast, so, it’s got a very mild bitterness to it, allowing you to taste all the nuances of the blend. After a few sips you can really taste the nutty sweetness. I’ve found that if you add just a touch of heavy cream, the brews nuttiness carries through your entire palate, and the aftertaste is that of pecans or some other roasted nut.
I find this to be a great coffee for the early morning or as your first coffee after lunch.

Krups Power Brew Coffeemaker Review
Coffee is getting expensive and everyone is looking for a comprable solution to going to Starbucks or another coffee shop. I found a review on Krumps Power Brew Coffeemaker that I thought the readers might find interesting.:
************
The corner coffee shop may deliver a consistent brew, but for those who cannot wait, a home brewing machine is the only answer. The Krups Power Brew Coffee Maker is a solid alternative to the corner cafe. Featuring 1,400 watts of power, the coffeemaker belts out a pot of coffee fast and hot, delivering it between 195 degrees F and 205 degrees F. A showerhead-type nozzle gives full coverage of the grounds, assuring a brew that is well-rounded with full coffee flavor.
The stylish coffeemaker is decked out in a piano-black finish and features an easy-to-read angled LCD control panel. Programming options exist for weekday and weekend cycles, along with a small-batch setting. The glass carafe holds up to 60 ounces and is easily accessible at any time during the cycle, due to a brew-pause feature that lets you sneak out a cup before brewing is complete. Save yourself a trip to the coffee shop; even though getting there may be half the fun, it is more fun to have a well-brewed cup of coffee waiting for you in the morning.

Go Green With Your Coffee Brewer
We are all looking to Go Green for the environment. Hourglass has created a new coffee maker to help us do just that. The catch? It uses no electricity.
The Hourglass Cold Brew Coffee Maker looks sharp with its hourglass design. Its very easy on the eyes, and on your electric bill. Its easy on the back too, weighing only 2.8lbs.
The high heat and fast brew times of hot brew coffee makers can create bitter tasting coffee that’s often high in acid, causing stomach aches. Hourglass coffee maker solves this problem, with cold-brewing. Because the coffee beans are not exposed to heat, bitter acids and oils are not released. Hourglass claims that this brewing process results in 69.6% less acid than hot brewed coffee.
Centuries ago, native cultures perfected the art of coffee making. These ancient coffee connoisseurs hand-selected the best beans, dried them in the sun, coarsely ground them, and soaked them overnight in pure, cold water to produce a rich and smooth tasting coffee extract. The Hourglass coffee maker brings the Lost Art of cold brewing into the 21st century, and into your home.
Kona, Not Hawaii’s Only Brew
Hawaii is best known for Kona coffee, but the state is about to put another brew on the map. Tea.
The federal Department of Agriculture has been encouraging Hawaii’s commercial gowers to cultivate high quality tea crops for the past decade.
Tea Hawaii,, a company that cultivates two high quality black and oolong teas, has been shipping their teas to Samovar Tea Lounge in San Fransisco. However, you do not need to go to California or Hawaii to try Tea Hawaii tea. Samovar Tea Lounge will be adding these teas to their website on August 7th for delivery right to your door.
Mauna Kea is another one of Hawaii’s up and coming tea companies. They carry oolong and green teas. Hilo Coffee Mill has great oolong tea as well.

Roast Your Own Coffee At Home: Roaster Review
For those who are a fan of coffee, its always interesting to look into the roasting process. From the green bean right to your cup, its all very interesting. I have now found a new hobby, roasting my own beans at home.
There are a number of coffee roasters available for home use. Some are affordable and some are on the very expensive side. I tried out the more affordable FreshRoast + eight home coffee roaster which runs a little over $100. I found it to be a good product and I got 5 pounds of green beans for free to boot!
This particular roaster is perfect for a small household of one or two people. It looks very nice sitting on my kitchen counter as well. Always a plus! It only takes 7 minutes to roast 3.5lbs of green coffee beans. It has timer and a chaff collector. It is fairly quiet and does not smoke up the house. The smell of the roasting beans is amazing.
Aerobie Aeropress Coffee & Espresso Maker Review
The Aerobie Aeropres is a single cut coffee & espresso maker. It
The coffee is micro-filtered. It so pure and particle-free that it can be stored for days as a concentrate. The concentrate can be drunk as espresso, mixed with milk for lattes, or diluted to make American coffee.
Its easy to use and clean, which is a must! It also makes your espresso and coffee taste great! Also, you cannot beat the price. Total immersion of the grounds in the water results in rapid yet robust extraction of flavor and allows for a moderate temperature, which results in a smoother brew. The air pressure, created by the plunger, shortens filtering time to approximately 20 seconds. This avoids the bitter taste associated with the long process of traditional drip brewing. The air pressure squeezes the last goodness from the grounds, enriching the flavor of the coffee. Due to the lower temperature and shorter brewing time, the acid level of the coffee is much lower than traditional brewers. Aeropress released laboratory pH testing results which measured the brew’s acid as less than one fifth that of regular drip brew. The low acid is confirmed by coffee drinkers of the product who confirmed that coffee made with the Aeropress was much friendlier to their stomachs.
The Aeropress is slightly more time-consuming for the user than traditional french press or drip coffee makers. It takes about the same amount of time as a standard espresso machine.
