Some Interesting FACTS about COFFEE

-41% of Americans drink coffee daily (smart people!)

-Approx. 11 Billion pounds of coffee are consumed every year. (1 Billion of that actually is consumed away from my own home 😉 )

-Number of specialty coffee houses in 1989: 585 / 2003:17,400

-All coffee is grown within 2000 miles of the equator

-Germany surprisingly is the world’s second largest consumer of coffee in terms of volume at 16 pounds per person a year. With over 43% of drinkers putting sweetener in their brew compared to 23% here in the states. (16 pounds per person? I wish I could cut down to that. )

-An acre of coffee trees produces roughly 10,000 pounds of coffee cherries. That equates to nearly 2,000 pounds of beans after its processed.

-No coffee is grown in the United States or its territories. Except in Hawaii (Kona) and Puerto Rico

-Until 1870’s the majority of coffee was roasted in a pan over a fire. It wasn’t until very recently that batch roasting became popular.

-Each year some 7 million tons of green coffee beans are produced world wide. Almost all of it is hand picked.

Mc Donald’s restaurants still far and away sells the most brewed coffee in the US and the world ( Good Grief! )
